TOP Class: The Revolutionary War in South Carolina
Next semester Jonathan Newell and I will be teaching a TOP class on the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. TOP classes are continuing education classes offered at Bob Jones University for both the Greenville community and the BJU family. The following is our course description:
Did you know that more Revolutionary War battles were fought in South Carolina than in any other state? Come learn about the state’s quest for independence through informative lectures and battlefield visits. The class will cover the history of the Revolution in the South by studying the pivotal events at the Battle of Cowpens and the siege of Ninety-Six. The class will cover topics of military history, including weapons and tactics. Two guided tours will let you experience the battlegrounds first-hand. The class will also provide information about other national and state park sites that are available to visit. Students must arrange their own transportation for field trips.
At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, and at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday March 27, Jonathan and I will be lecturing on the Southern campaign in the Revolutionary War. We will highlight battlefields and historic sites in South Carolina. On Saturday, March 8, and Saturday, March 29, we will be leading tours of Cowpens National Battlefield and Ninety Six National Historic Site.
Jonathan and I have some experience in leading tours of battlefields, because this October we led a field trip for Dr. Brenda Schoolfield’s U.S. history class. Jon also has experience as a teaching assistant in the history department at BJU.
The cost for the class is $15. If you add up the time for two lectures and two tours, that works out to be about $1.50 per hour, which isn’t a bad deal. Of course, if you are faculty or staff at BJU you can take the class for free if you use it as your one free class per semester.
Mark your calendars for March 2008. We hope to see you then.
The actual number of Revolutionary War battlefields in South Carolina is close to 560+ according to Park Ranger John Robertson!
No one knows what really happened in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. The fighting was so intense and frequent that there has never been a compilation of what really happened. The State of SC was bankrupt for many years afterwards.
I think that SC has a very unique story to tell when it comes to the Revolutionary War.
